Why Knowing God Matters (Week Starting September 2, 2018)

Read this Scripture:
Jeremiah 9:23-24 (HCSB)
23 This is what the Lord says:
The wise man must not boast in his wisdom; the strong man must not boast in his strength; the wealthy man must not boast in his wealth.
24 But the one who boasts should boast in this, that he understands and knows Me — that I am Yahweh, showing faithful love, justice, and righteousness on the earth, for I delight in these things.
This is the Lord’s declaration.

Read this Thought:
There are many important things about each and every one of us.  How old we are. When our birthday is. What we like to eat. What are our favorite things to do.  What makes us happy. What makes us sad. These are just a few very important things.

A preacher called A W Tozer once said, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”  Why would he say that? Why would that be more important than anything else? Because God is more important than anything or anyone else - even us!

Even though God is really, really, really, very, very important, He knows us and He wants us to know Him.  How awesome is that! Knowing God is more important than any other thing in our lives. Like the verse from Jeremiah says, knowing God is the thing we should boast about.

Do this Activity:
We are going to learn lots about God in the coming weeks, but you probably already know some things about him.  Get a ball (or something else that you can throw to each other) and sit or stand in a circle. Throw the ball to someone else in the circle and when they catch it they have to say something that is true about God (for example, “God is good” or “God is wise”).

Discuss this Question:
After all we have talked about, why do you think knowing God is so important?

September Scripture Memory:
Deuteronomy 6:4-5 - 4 “Listen, Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is One.  5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
