God is Eternal (Week Starting October 21, 2018)

Read this Scripture:
Revelation 1:8 - “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “the One who is, who was, and who is coming, the Almighty.”

Read this Thought:
What does the word eternal mean?  It is a word used to describe something without beginning and without an end.  Imagine a circle drawn on a page - it is a line that has no starting point and no ending.

God is eternal.  He has always existed and will always exist.  He has no beginning and no end. That’s very, very hard for us to understand because we are, in this way, quite different from God. We are born, we live our lives, and then we die.

Thankfully that’s not all that life is about…  In a book called Ecclesiastes, in the Bible, we are told that God has placed eternity in our hearts (Ecclesiastes 3:11).  So even though we have a very definite beginning (the day we were born), God designed us to live forever with Him.

The way that we are able to have this life that goes on, even after death, is through Jesus.  Jesus himself said, “For God loved the world in this way: He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16 emphasis added).

Do this Activity:
Find a glass or another object near you that is circular.  Show the circle at the top of the glass and ask them where the circle starts and where the circle ends?  Then ask why we can’t tell? Finally ask how this is like God who has no beginning and no end?

Discuss this Question:
Why should the fact that God is eternal bring us comfort?

October Scripture Memory:
Jeremiah 9:24 - The one who boasts should boast in this, that he understands and knows Me — that I am Yahweh, showing faithful love, justice, and righteousness on the earth, for I delight in these things.
